Nautical School to Haven
Our History
how we started
Formidable Fedden.
Originally constructed in 1906, the Nautical School at Fedden Village was named after its founder, Captain Henry Fedden. This prestigious institution was designed to train young men for maritime careers, instilling values of discipline and hard work. The grand architecture and scenic location made it an iconic landmark in Portishead, North Somerset. The school was initially based on the HMS Formidable, an 84-gun ship moored off the coast, before moving to the onshore facility.
The onshore building was officially opened by Princess Helena in 1906 and featured three storeys with a central tower and a basement. The dormitories had wooden floors and hammocks to simulate the environment on a ship, although these were later replaced with beds. The school continued to train boys, especially for the Royal and Merchant Navies, until its closure in 1982

Apartments.
The Nautical School, was saved from demolition by entrepreneur Henry Hector, who invested £800,000 to transform it into beautiful apartments. Set in over 22 acres of private land overlooking the Bristol Channel, the elegant building has been sympathetically restored and extended, now providing 93 individually designed superior homes. These spacious and luxurious apartments are available in a range of sizes and styles to suit various requirements.
The ‘Tower Penthouse,’ the ‘Britannia Suite,’ and the ‘Captain’s House’ face towards the Channel, offering stunning views of the gardens and terrace. At the lower level, the private ‘Admiral’s Walk’ features a unique promenade of vaulted split-level houses with two or three bedrooms, each with a lounge on the first floor, vaulted ceilings, and arched hardwood balcony windows with glorious Channel views. To the rear, a private cloister with ships’ rigging, hanging baskets, planters, and statuary adds to the charm.
The new part of the building complements the original architecture and includes a range of two and three-bedroom apartments and three-bedroom maisonettes, most with balconies overlooking woodland and gardens. Undercover parking is available to all residents, enhancing the convenience and appeal of living at Fedden Village.
